Issue 6, APRIL 2022

Hello from Q-FARM:

Welcome Friends:

As we leave our admittedly mild California winter behind to welcome spring, renewal is in the air. As you’ll see in this quarter’s newsletter, those gentle winds of change are blowing through Q-FARM as well.

• David Schuster and Jon Simon are joining Stanford as new faculty. Two of the most creative and accomplished researchers working today in quantum computing and quantum optics, they will be tremendous additions to Q-FARM.
• Our 2022 Bloch Fellows are eager to begin work in their host labs. A big welcome to all six!
• Spring quantum science and engineering courses are open for registration. Akasha Hayden shares her perspective on freshman seminar Physics 14N.

Are you a faculty member interested in learning more about the commercial landscape for quantum technologies and making connections in industry? Q-FARM needs a faculty liaison for the Quantum Economic Development Consortium. If you’re interested, contact qfarm-contact@stanford.edu.

I hope you will take a few moments to read about our growing Q-FARM initiative. If you’re able to drop by a seminar or two this spring, I look forward to seeing you there. Do you know someone who would enjoy being on our mailing list? They can request to join via email at qfarm-contact@stanford.edu.

I’d also like to acknowledge that this is still a time of significant upheaval. Covid-19, while in retreat, remains a challenge for many of our members. The horrific destruction caused by Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine is a reminder to all of us of the fragility of life and the need to work constructively and cooperatively toward a better future.
