Main content start

Joonhee Choi will join Stanford January 1, 2023. Joonhee's research focus has been on engineering the dynamics of quantum many-body systems for both exploring fundamental science and demonstrating practical quantum applications.

Joonhee received his Ph.D. and master’s from Harvard University, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology. Prior to joining Stanford, he worked as an IQIM postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter (IQIM) at Caltech. He was awarded the 2021 Outstanding Young Researcher Award from the Association of Korean Physicists in America.

Joonhee’s research focus has been on engineering the dynamics of quantum many-body systems for both exploring fundamental science and demonstrating practical quantum applications. Throughout his career, he has made seminal advances in a wide variety of fields ranging from nonlinear nano-optics, ultrafast phenomena, solid-state and atomic physics, and quantum many-body physics to practical applications in quantum metrology, communication, and information processing. More details at Choi Lab website.

His current research interests lie in developing and engineering large-scale quantum devices, using both atomic and solid-state systems, to conduct cutting-edge research in this exciting era of advancing quantum technology. These interests include benchmarking near-term noisy quantum computers and simulators, probing complex quantum many-body dynamics such as thermalization and chaos, utilizing entangled ancilla qubits in a solid-state device for quantum information storage and processing, and demonstrating high-precision quantum sensing utilizing entanglement.

Joonhee says “I am very much looking forward to interacting with the amazing faculty and students at Stanford. I can’t wait to explore exciting new opportunities, connect dots between different fields, and diversify the scope of ongoing work in the Stanford quantum community.”

Joonhee starts his new position as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering in January 2023.
