Emily Chen

Emily is a PhD student in the Materials Science and Engineering department. She is broadly interested in using the laws of quantum mechanics and computer simulations to engineer materials for sustainability applications. Prior to Stanford, Emily earned a BS in Chemistry from the University of Chicago— where she researched artificial photosynthesis— and an MPhil in Scientific Computing from the University of Cambridge— where she studied how atoms move and conduct heat in solar cell materials. Outside of the lab, Emily enjoys hiking, reading, and trying samples at the farmer’s market. She is also excited to get involved with STEM mentorship and outreach at Stanford.
